Environmental Protection and Enforcement Task Force Chief, Executive Director Nilo B. Tamoria received one Scops owl (Otusmegalotis), on May 17, 2020, from Ms. Irma Diaz of Barangay Tagpos, Binangonan, Rizal. Tamoria said the bird could have been a victim of habitat loss, abandoned by its parents when the area was cleared recently for resettlement. Early this month, there were several sightings of stray wildlife in the area, prompting Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu to call on the public to report or turn over any of these poor creatures to the nearest environment and natural resources office. Endemic species, such as the Scops owl are protected under Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act of 2001. The juvenile owl will be nursed and treated carefully at the Biodiversity Management Bureau until it grows at an age when it can be released back to the wild. ###
