Environment Secretary Antonia Loyzaga (3rd from right) participated in the Green Shipping Coalition Roundtable discussion on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly last September 19 in New York City. The event, hosted by Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs of Denmark Morten Bødskov (5th from left) and Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitack Lim (4th from left), was an informal dialogue on how to accelerate the green transition of the shipping industry in line with the IMO Climate Strategy. During the meeting, the participants discussed the challenges that need to be addressed in greening the shipping industry in terms of fuel, technology, training, and supply chain, among others. Loyzaga shared the Philippines’ actions and initiatives, highlighting how President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. made logistics and transport improvement among his socio-economic goals. She also highlighted the country’s robust partnership with the private sector for the upskilling and reskilling of seafarers, noting that there is still a need to redesign the training of Philippine seafarers for emerging skills and equipment.
