Distinguished guests, colleagues from the government, and partners from the private sector and development community,
Ladies and gentlemen, good morning.
It is with great pleasure and profound pride that I stand before you today on this momentous occasion. Today marks a significant milestone in our nation’s conservation efforts as we gather to celebrate the designation of Pasonanca Natural Park as the 52nd ASEAN Heritage Park, the 10th in the Philippines, and the first in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
The journey of Pasonanca Natural Park to this prestigious status is one steeped in history and rich in ecological significance. Legislated as a protected area under Republic Act (RA) 11038, also known as the Expanded National Integrated Protected Area System (ENIPAS) Act of 2018, this designation symbolizes our unwavering commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development.
Established as a watershed forest reservation through Presidential Proclamation 1999 on December 17, 1989, under the name “Pasonanca Watershed Forest Reserve”, its importance was further reinforced under the NIPAS Act of 1992. Subsequently, it was officially recognized as Pasonanca Natural Park by Presidential Proclamation 132 on July 5, 1999.
With a total area of 17,414 hectares, Pasonanca Natural Park is indeed a bastion of biodiversity in the Zamboanga Peninsula. Its lush landscape, characterized by secondary and old-growth Dipterocarp Forests, stands as a testament to the resilience and inherent pristine natural beauty of our natural heritage. The threatened Mindanao Bleeding-heart and the critically endangered Philippine Eagle are among the rare species sighted in the area. Today, we celebrate not only its ecological completeness but also its profound conservation significance, making it a beacon of hope for biodiversity conservation efforts in this Region.
This recognition not only underscores the Park’s importance on a national and regional scale but also highlights our collective commitment to preserving our natural treasures for the generation now and in the future.
As we commemorate this historic moment, let us renew our dedication to the conservation and sustainable management of Pasonanca Natural Park and all protected areas across our nation. Together, let us continue to work towards a future where nature thrives, and our shared heritage remains protected and sustained to ensure continuous flow of goods and ecosystems services.
This recognition stands as a testament to our collective efforts and serves as an inspiration to further elevate our conservation endeavors. It is a reminder that while we have made significant strides, our work is far from over. We must continue to champion the cause of environmental stewardship, ensuring that our natural wonders are safeguarded for the benefit of all.
Therefore, I urge for continuous monitoring, evaluation, and joint stewardship of the Pasonanca Natural Park and other protected areas. Let this significant recognition inspire us to continue to work together, monitor and ensure the long-term preservation of our valuable ecosystems.
In conclusion, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to this momentous achievement. Your dedication and tireless efforts have made this day possible. Let us forge ahead with renewed vigor, united in our commitment to preserving our precious natural heritage.
Thank you, and may we continue to strive for a future where harmony between humanity and nature prevails.
