The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) continues to monitor areas affected by the oil spill caused by the sinking of MT Princess Empress in February 2023. DENR Secretary Antonia Loyzaga (seated, center) and University of the Philippines—Visayas (UPV) Oil Spill Response Program Head Dr. Resurreccion B. Sadaba (standing, 3rd from left) discussed the assessment of areas impacted by the oil spill in Semirara, Caluya, and Mindoro Oriental; and how to address the damage and minimize the environmental and social impacts of the maritime incident. The assessment project is a collaborative effort between UPV, Mindoro State University, and local government units from the provinces of Oriental Mindoro and Antique. It includes the current state of mangroves, seagrass beds, shorelines, corals, and water and sediment quality. Also present in the meeting were Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology Research Associate Precious Nikola Gauran, Zoological Society of London Chief Mangrove Scientific Advisor Dr. Jurgenne Primavera, UPV Professor Jessica Dator-Bercilla, DENR Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna and DENR Region VII Executive Director Livino Duran.
