‘Isalvon” – the mascot for the near extinct Isabela Oriole (inset) debuts as the symbol of wildlife conservation program within the 359,486-hectare Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park (NSMNP).  The mascot’s unveiling coincided with the launching of the ‘LAWIN Forest and Biodiversity Protection System’ which seeks to boost the country’s campaign against illegal wildlife trading and poaching using internet and high-tech wireless communication gadgets.  Gracing the event are DENR Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio (2nd from right), DENR Asst. Jose Luis Fernandez, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative to the Philippines, graces Monday’s celebration of International Day of Forests (IFD) held at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Quezon City.  Fernandez also served as judge to the photo contest organized by the Forest Management Bureau, which drew more than a hundred entries from photo enthusiasts nationwide. The photo contest was anchored on theme, Forests and Water. ###

Forest Management Bureau Director Ricardo Calderon explains the critical role of forests in providing livelihood support to more than 1.6 billion people on earth, serving as home to more than 80% of terrestrial species of plants and animals, including insects, and in mitigating climate change.  Calderon likewise stressed during the Monday flag ceremony, which coincided with the celebration of International Day of Forests (IFD), of the need to continue with the rehabilitation of open, denuded and degraded forestlands, covering around 7.1 million hectares, as envisioned in Executive Order No. 193 issued by President Aquino.  This year’s IDF theme is ‘Celebrating Forests and Water’. ###

“Breathtaking and compelling” -- that’s how Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Jonas Leones describe the top 20 photos up for final judging by  officials of DENR, including Leones, during today’s ceremony held to celebrate the International Day of Forests.  More than a hundred photo entries were received by the Forest Management Bureau to its photo contest held to promote public awareness on the critical role of forests in ensuring the country’s water supply, in support of this year’s IFD theme “Celebrating Forests and Water”. ###

Paje (center, in eyeglasses) and Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Theresa Mundita Lim (right) lead the recognition of personnel of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in the 3rd Wildlife Law Enforcement Awarding Ceremony held at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City during the celebration of World Wildlife Day on March 3. The NBI personnel were instrumental in the conduct of three separate operations against suspected illegal traders in Pasay and Davao cities, leading to the confiscation of 163 heads of various wild fauna and the filing of criminal complaints against the suspects. ###

Personnel of the Bureau of Customs were awarded with certificates of recognition for their role in a wildlife enforcement operation at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City in January, which led to the arrest and filing of criminal complaints against a government employee who attempted to transport 46 heads of various wildlife which were subsequently confiscated. The certificates were distributed during the 3rd Wildlife Law Enforcement Awarding Ceremony held in Quezon City in celebration of World Wildlife Day. The ceremony was led by Environment Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje (center, in eyeglasses), US Agency for International Development Environment Officer Dani Newcomb and Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Theresa Mundita Lim (right and second from right, respectively).
