16-08-22--Peoples-Day-webEnvironment Secretary Gina Lopez welcomes a member of an indigenous group who attended the first People’s Day held Wednesday (August 10) at the DENR central office in Quezon City.  Around a hundred individuals from various sectors, including indigenous peoples, non-government organizations and other ordinary citizens, came either to present the concerns of their communities or extend their support to the new administration through partnership.  On hand to assist Lopez in responding to issues raised are key officials of the department, including those of bureaus and attached agencies. Lopez said that henceforth, People’s Day will held every Wednesday in all DENR offices nationwide to allow officials and employees to address public concerns and queries. Officials of six government agencies, namely: (L-R) BGen Restituto F. Padilla Jr. of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Undersecretary Eduardo del Rosario of the Department of National Defense, Secretary Arthur Tugade of the Department of Transportation, Secretary Ismael Sueno of the Department of Interior and Local Government, Director General Ronald “Bato” De la Rosa of the Philippine National Police, and Rear Admiral William Melad of the Philippine Coast Guard signed a memorandum of agreement with Lopez for the creation of a national anti-environmental crimes task force, also to be known as “A-Team Kalikasan” to run after large-scale environmental offenders.   The signing was held Monday (August 8, 2016) at the DENR central office in Quezon City. ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez (left) turns over to President Rodrigo Duterte,  the Mindanao Environment Agenda submitted by Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) President Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ (right) during the Mindanao Environment Summit held Thursday at the AdDU. The agenda contains the state of the Mindanao environment, including recommendations to address the environmental issues raised by mining communities. Some 4,000 participants, mostly representatives from civil society organizations,  students and indigenous groups attended the summit with theme, OYA MINDANAW, was co-organized by the DENR and AdDU as a strategy for the government to interact closer with the environment’s stakeholders. ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez vows to strengthen civil society participation in environmental governance, guided by the principle of the common good during the Public Forum on the Environmental Policy Agenda for the Duterte Administration and the 17th Congress held Friday (July 29) at the Microtel UP Technohub in Quezon City. Lopez, who keynoted the forum organized by the Alternative Law Groups (ALG), said she would open up a civic sector arm in the agency. ###

Environment Secretary Gina L. Lopez shows the media photos of a river in Palawan that became silted and ruddy because of the irresponsible mining activities in the province. According to Lopez, fishermen in the area have complained  of fewer catch  due to the poor river condition. The photos were part of the report submitted by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development after conducting a water sampling activity in the area. ###
