Environment Secretary Gina Lopez explains to media that she is not against mining but said that they (mining firms) should do it in a way “it does not cause suffering” and should have “reverence for the common good”. Lopez made the statement during Tuesday’s press conference where the results of the month-long mining audit were presented to media. Of the 41 metallic mines audited, only 11 “passed” the review. ###

A member of the Dumagat indigenous community from the Sierra Madre signs the "Pahayag" which states their current situation and lists their appeal on issues that affect them, including the need for livelihood opportunities, illegal logging, lack of social services and issuance of certificate of ancestral domain titles. The document was drafted during the Indigenous Peoples Summit held from Sept. 23 to 26 in Quezon City. It will be given to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Environment Secretary Regina Paz L. National Commission for Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Chair Leonor Quintayo affirms the commitment of the NCIP to protect not only the welfare of IPs but also the mountains of Sierra Madre which is their home. “Sierra Madre has many ancestral domains which the government, in partnership with the IP communities, should be responsible for,” Quintayo said.  The IP Summit was held at the Biodiversity Management Bureau Training Center in Quezon on the occasion of the Save Sierra Madre Day on September 26. ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez successfully rallied Fr. Alfredo Ubas Albor (left), chairman of the United Indigenous People’s Alliance of Mindanao and Imam Ebra M. Moxir (right), president of the Imam Council of the Philippines to save Lanao Lake from further deterioration during the first SALUGNAYAN or SALu-salo at UGNAYan para sa Kalikasan held September 1, 2016 at the DENR central office in Quezon City.  Around 80 leaders of various civil society organizations from across the country attended the meeting called by Lopez to build and strengthen partnerships at the grassroots level for the implementation of livelihood projects in 14 convergence areas. ###

Smiles broke out as Environment Secretary Gina Lopez, while planting a “Bignay Kalabaw” seedling, urged volunteers from the Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association (BSFAA) to plant and grow trees “in the name of Gross National Happiness.” Lopez led the launch of BSFAA’s  “Marathon Tree Planting, Tree Growing”  held Wednesday at the UP Arboretum in Quezon City. The project commits BSFAA’s 15,000 active members, through its 50 chapters nationwide, to plant and grow Philippine native trees, on top of the 150,000 trees the group has so far raised in support to the government’s National Greening Program.  Behind Lopez is  BFAA Officer Dr. Rafael Roque. ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez (extreme right, standing) talks about the two principles which she will follow in leading DENR to achieve its goals: Convergence and Area Management. Convergence, she said during a meeting with Environment and Natural Resources Officers (ENROs) of various local government units, means to tie up with other government agencies, while Area Management is managing the two arms of the DENR, the development and the business arm. During the meeting held Wednesday (August 10) at the DENR central office in Quezon City, the ENROs proposed different environmental programs, particularly enhnanced ENR law enforcement at the local level, including conduct of waste-to-energy summit, to Lopez.  Also present in the said meeting is former Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn (seated last at the right side). ###
